Three tins of baked beans, a burning planet, and at last there is hope.

Growing food has become a roll of the dice, a crisis management plan needed every step of the way, was it always like this? I am sure it was not.

We are lucky here in Green Earth Organics though and if you are stuck and there is (and there will be, because there already has been) an environmental shock that disrupts our just in time food system and you can’t get any food, well drop by. Why?

Well, we have been told to hang onto a least three cans of baked beans and we have taken this good government advice very seriously. I’ll tell you what let all this climate chaos roar on, because I have my three cans safely tucked away in a secret location, if only everybody was so prepared. Great advice that, for two reasons, it’s up to you and I to get our three tins of beans to ride out the next great climate shock, and it means the guys burning our planet don’t have to give out any free beans.

Obviously, they can ill afford to Shell (no pun intended) out for free beans.  Watch here to see my take on Shell executives (your average big, friendly oil company) clapping and cheering and popping champagne in the New York Stock exchange, they have just made $8.1 billion in profit for the previous three months, double the same time last year. They are absolutely loving it, they are making so much money from burning our planet, what a great bunch they are.

The bigger question though is: Will the beans be enough to stave off the depression and apathy I wonder? It’s easy to slide into a sense of helplessness when we look at how the climate crisis seems to be unravelling natural systems, we have relied on for thousands of years.

The ultra rich are getting richer, and the polluters are getting richer and we are the ones paying.  Paying by suffering through extreme heat and droughts and floods and hurricanes and it goes on and on.

These greedy individuals and corporations use distraction and easy targets (think immigrants, because of course they are to blame. Not that like three individuals in the world now have all the money and resources) to keep the spotlight off their eye watering consolidation of wealth, and make no mistake they have no shame, they feel entitled to more and more, as it always is with greed.

They want us locked into a fossil fuel future, because this will keep the euros rolling into their coffers, where is environmental accountability in all of this?

So yeah, I’m sick of it, I’m sick of the hypocrisy and the Short-termism.  I’m sick of how hard it is to survive as a vegetable farmer in this country, and I am sick of saying that we have a better solution than tins of beans right under our feet. It seems the fact that we can grow our own food got lost in translation somewhere around the days of the Celtic Tiger, the baby went out with the bath water it seems.

So, let’s get back to growing, let’s grow vegetables, let’s grow more food here in Ireland, lets even grow bloody beans, and I am serious why not? And let’s tell the government that we don’t want any more dirty fossil fuel companies clogging up our beautiful planet and destroying our fragile ecosystem.

So, you know what I am heading to the March against Climate Chaos next Saturday the 14th of November I will be walking with my son Joe and will be joining Friends of the Earth Ireland there. It starts at 1pm in the Garden of Remembrance Dublin, will you join us? If so, hopefully see you there.

Oh, and not to get political but ok yes, I am going to get political, thank all that is sane and right in the world, that the day of reckoning has finally come for the  largest most deranged fascist on the planet, maybe finally we have reached a turning point, there is hope on the horizon.

As always, your support is more than just buying a veg box or some sustainable groceries, it is voting with your wallet for a different future.

Thank you so much

Kenneth
